Those of us who were home educating in the 1980's remember very clearly the battle for home schooling freedom. How we in our family wish HSLDA had been around when we were beginners!
Believe it or not, there was a time when our school aged children hid under their beds when the doorbell rang. And families all over the country were experiencing similar attacks.
Then HSLDA was born and home schoolers at last had a powerful ally in battle.
Our state has had amicable home schooling laws since 1984, but the Boyers continue to renew our HSLDA membership annually. Why? Because we are informed enough to know that the battle for parental rights is never over, but shifts to new arenas from time to time.
Every year there are new legislative attempts to restrict home schooling and HSLDA is there to fight for us. More than that, HSLDA is a bulwark against the onslaught of unscrupulous social services challenges and other nonschooling issues. They are constantly watching for abuses of official power in many different forms that could threaten parental rights. They communicate with school superintendents, social workers and law enforcement personnel to ensure that families are not harassed inappropriately. They monitor legislation as it moves through state and federal legislatures to head off threats from that quarter. They are even at the forefront of resistance to the diabolical U. N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a sinister treaty that threatens not only family rights but even America's national sovereignty.
